Interadventure - Leaving the Rockies

  • "Was Grandma Mary crying, Mom"? Mel asked once they were on I-70, heading back to the airport.
  • "Grandpa Peter looked sad too, Mom," Mal said.
  • "Well, this is the first time in many years since we've seen each other. You were just babies. They were so happy to see all of us, how you've grown. It's always kind of sad when someone you love goes away and you know it will be a long time until you see them again," Agnes explained. "I'm kind of sad, too!"
  • "It has been a long time, Aggie," Mort said softly. "We see my dad, the twins' grandfather, all the time. This is the first time in more than six years that you've seen your folks. It would be nice to see them more often, wouldn't it? And it would be good for Mal and Mel, too."
  • "You're right. It would also be nice for them to visit during the glorious time when the snow disappears and the mountains come to life with wildflowers, and the grass is so green, the sky so blue..."
  • "Gee, Mom, you sound like you don't like all the neat snow," Mal commented.
  • "Not at all," Agnes said. "I like all the seasons. Some people escape to warm weather during the winter, but your Grandpa Peter used to say 'There's a reason to enjoy each season' and I think he's right. Each season brings its own special reason to enjoy nature."
  • "I like summer best," said Mel. "Winter's too cold."
  • "Winter's not my favorite season either," said Mort. "Better get used to it, or even better, adapt to it. What was it that people in northern climates like to say? I think it's something like 'there's no bad weather, just bad clothing.'"
  • "That's cool, Dad. Or warm, I guess," Mal said, giggling at his own joke.
  • "We'd better dress warmly for our next outing in January," Mort agreed. "I hear that Starved Rock has some great ice falls that you can actually walk behind."
  • "Speaking of ice falls, look at that!" Agnes pointed to the right as they approached Idaho Springs.
  • "Wow!" That was about all either Mal or Mel could say.
